When you volunteer as a Kneeland Firefighter you give up a good deal of personal and family time to respond to all sorts of emergency situations to help others. Since most of these volunteers come from backgrounds not related to the fire service they will log hundreds of hours annually honing and learning new skills to become volunteer firefighters.
In trying to explain what motivates volunteer firefighters, “It's in the blood”. There is just something about being able to help others in their time of need. You don't want there to be a fire or other emergency, but if there is going to be one you want to be on the team to do something about it. They want to be at the end of the nozzle, operating the jaws of life, giving medical aid, maybe even saving a life. They don’t do this for recognition or a pay check, but more for that personal satisfaction of helping someone get thru possibly their worst day and feeling pretty good about it. We recognize not all incidents are going to turn out the way we had hoped, but we gave it our best.
There will always be those who want to be a volunteer firefighter. They join, stay a while, some move on to firefighting careers, many will leave due to personal life changes. Inevitably, new generations will assume the rolls and responsibilities insuring a professional, well trained and committed fire department for present and future Kneeland residents. As time will have it most will not remember our names but our deeds will certainly have influenced the future. Thank you for your service.
